Paced Bottle Feeding Technique

Paced Bottle Feeding

When your baby is bottle feeding, it is important to control the flow of milk coming out of bottle, so your baby can feed at a comfortable pace. Paced bottle feeding is a technique that allows your baby to drinks more slowly and takes breaks, helping to prevent overfeeding and chocking.
  1. Use bottle with wide based slow flow nipple
  2. Holding your baby in upright position, supporting their head and neck with your hand
  3. Touch your baby’s upper lip with the bottle nipple to encourage your baby to open their mouth wide.
  4.  Let your baby pull the bottle into mouth. Do not force the bottle nipple into their mouth.
  5. During feeding, Hold the bottle horizontally and the nipple should not be full of milk (bottle nipple is partially full).
  6. Allowing your baby to drink at their own pace.
  7. Count your baby sucks and swallow. If your baby doesn’t take a breath every 3- 5 sucks, remove the bottle and take a few seconds rest. So your baby can breath.

Prevent chocking during bottle feeding.

During feeding, we should watch out the signs of overfeeding or chocking. These include :
  1. Swallowing quickly without taking a breath
  2. Milk Spills out of their mouth
  3. Flaring nostrils or wide eyes
  4. Stiffening of arms and legs
  5. Lips turning blue
Remove the bottle immediately if your baby showing any of these signs. Introducing formula slowly can help manage these issues. Proper bottle positioning is also crucial; holding the bottle at an angle prevents air from entering, reducing the risk of gas and colic. When persistent issues occur, consulting with a pediatrician is advisable. They can provide guidance tailored to the baby’s specific needs. Adjusting the routine or exploring different formula options might be necessary.
